I came into Art 3 with a lot of goals I had hoped to achieve. I entered the class with very little diversity in the works that I completed. I tended to stick with 'anime' or cartoon styles of art, all of which I had been doing for a while. Continually doing the same kind of work over and over wasn't allowing me to challenge myself.
Let me first start off this by saying I am a VERY stubborn student. It takes a lot of pushing from other people to get me to want to challenge myself and put a lot of effort into my work, so I am extremely lucky to have had Mr. Sands as a teacher in this course. Whenever I was being unproductive, he would encourage me to create new pieces and he would help me work with new mediums and give me tools to assist me in creating new pieces.
These are some of the pieces that I created in Art 3 that didn't really branch outside from what I was used to doing (anime/cartoon/etc.)

I eventually got bored with doing the same style of drawings over and over again. One of my goals when entering Art 3 was to explore new mediums. I had never tried watercolor, I always avoided it because I tend to like acrylic more and I didn't ever try to use watercolor. I was messing around one day and decided I wanted to make a piece that included lyrics of Ryan Ross' song 'Lonely Moonlight'. What I had envisioned was Ryan sitting on a moon that contained his lyrics (for our Text Art project), and in the background I would paint a watercolor galaxy. As I was painting it looked less and less like a galaxy and more like a tree, then it just changed into weird colors in the background.
I actually ended up liking it, I like the color combination a lot.
Another thing I wanted to try in this class was mixing two mediums that aren't typically used together. I decided to try graphite pencil and acrylic paint. I painted a sketch then used a toothbrush to flick acrylic paint onto the sketch. I like how it looks like a typical drawing, but the acrylic adds an abstract feeling to it.

Lastly, there was ONE THING that I have been trying to do nearly my entire life, and that was to draw realistic images of people. I had never been good at it, you could actually say I was awful at it. My attempts at realistic drawings were laughable. Then for some reason, one day I decided I wanted to try one again. I took a sketch of Kim Hyun Joong that someone had done (shown below)
and I tried to make my own version of it for our "Artists Steal" project, where we make our own versions of something that has already been made. After using the grid method and shading using graphite and charcoal, this was the outcome.
I can honestly say this is my favorite piece of artwork I have ever completed. I was ecstatic that it came out looking realistic, and it actually resembled the person I was attempting to draw in the first place. After I drew this, my confidence grew, and I tried out some more realistic drawings.

This class has been the cause of a lot of my creative freedom. Having it 4th period allowed me to put a lot of the ideas I had during the day on paper, which was really cool because it actually changed the kind of pieces that I would create. This was my second class with Mr. Sands, and I definitely learned more in Art 3 than I have in any other art class. I've taken Art 1, Art 2, and Computer Art & Animation, and this one has been my most productive in terms of coming out of my shell and creating things I never thought I was capable of.
